DNA Consultation and Technical Support

Whether you already have collected samples or need collection advice, we can answer your questions. We've tried to anticipate the most frequently asked questions and provide answers below. Please contact us. We'd love to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I collect saliva for DNA analysis?
Because this question can be answered differently for each study, please call us before collecting. If hormones or additional biomarkers are to be assayed from the same samples, we will provide advice on overall collection and handling strategies.
How is DNA isolated?
Salimetrics utilizes DNA extraction methods designed specifically for returning data from saliva samples—even samples that are difficult to isolate and assay for polymorphism testing.
What do the 260/280 ratios mean?
Measuring the absorbance intensity of a DNA solution at wavelengths 260nm and 280nm is commonly used to determine the amount and purity of DNA. A pure sample of DNA has the 260/280 ratio at 1.8 and is relatively free from protein contamination.
Will my data be easy to understand?
You will receive your results in written and electronic form, making the data manipulation quick and easy. Assistance with data interpretation and manuscript preparation is also included.
If I already assayed my samples, can I reuse them for DNA?
Yes. You can re-assay the samples.
Do I need IRB approval?
Please contact us for assistance with IRB approval.
How do I know which DNA markers to analyze?
We have a team of experts who can help to make recommendations based on your investigative interest. Just ask! Salimetrics will assist in recommending the most meaningful and relevant polymorphisms for your project.
What types of saliva samples are appropriate for SNP Genotyping and VNTR Analysis?
  • Whole saliva
  • Saliva collected using Salimetrics collection devices
  • Saliva collected with DNA Genotek Oragene® devices
  • Saliva collected with Buccal swabs
Note: For projects not yet underway, please contact us for preferred methods of sample collection. Ask us about other sample types.
