α-Amylase
Salimetrics alpha-amylase Salivary Assay Kit was designed as a tool for researchers studying the concomitants and correlates of the psychobiology of the stress response. For years the effects of stress were measured using cortisol levels almost exclusively. Recently researchers have questioned if studying cortisol is enough. Theorists argue that since there are two principal components involved in physiological reactions to stress – the limbic hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (LHPA) axis and the autonomic nervous system – the next generation of study needs to look at both. Studies show that an increase in salivary α-amylase is a reliable indicator of physical and psychological stresses, and that salivary α-amylase levels can rise independent of cortisol levels, indicating α-amylase responds independent of the LHPA axis. Specimens to be assayed using Salimetrics Salivary Assay Kit can be collected using many different methods, and the assay requires only a minute sample test volume, enabling researchers to include minimally invasive measures of both the LHPA and SNS in their studies.
