Cotinine
Humans have used tobacco in various forms since primitive times. Despite vast amounts of modern research documenting the negative impact of tobacco use, the addictive properties of nicotine make it difficult to quit. The cost to individuals and society has led to widespread public interventions to curb smoking behavior. Therefore, its study is widespread. Using cotinine to measure nicotine exposure is the preferred method since its half-life is eight hours longer than that of nicotine. Salimetrics salivary cotinine assay can be employed to measure individual differences in nicotine load from direct or indirect tobacco smoke exposure as well as smokeless nicotine sources (e.g., nicotine patch, water, gum, inhalers).
