DHEA

Salimetrics Salivary DHEA Enzyme measures amounts of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in saliva. Similar to cortisol, DHEA is secreted by the adrenal gland in response to activation of the LHPA axis. Interestingly, however, DHEA is associated with states and conditions that are opposite from those associated with cortisol raising the possibility that the Cortisol to DHEA ratio is an appropriate metric to include in studies of the psychobiology of stress. DHEA secretion is low to undetectable until ‘adrenarche’ during middle childhood. At that time the levels rise rapidly prior to the onset of puberty, they continue to rise throughout young adulthood, then gradually decline later in life. Salivary measurements of DHEA enable researchers to study the early phases of the developmental transition through puberty.
